The history of ice lanterns in Harbin:

The history of ice lanterns in Harbin goes back centuries. During the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), local farmers and fishermen would make ice lanterns during the winter months.

How's the early lanterns were made?

They would fill a bucket with water and let it freeze part way. The ice would be removed from the bucket and a hole would be drilled in the top to allow the unfrozen water to escape creating a hollow container.

How to keep the ice lanterns shining?

An oil lamp would then be placed inside the ice container which would result in a windproof lantern.The lanterns would be placed outside their homes.

The Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival has three main sections; the Sun Island Scenic Area, the Harbin Ice and Snow World, and Zhaolin Park.

Zhaolin Park:

One of the most popular parts of the Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival are the ice lanterns and sculptures found in Zhaolin Park. The lanterns and sculptures in Zhaolin Park have numerous themes including Chinese and Western folk tales, cultural depictions, animals, natural scenery, and abstract art. They are amazing works of frozen art.

The Harbin Ice and Snow World:

Beginning in 1999, the Harbin Ice and Snow world is one of the world's largest ice architecture parks. It is in this area that the giant ice buildings are located. There are also ice and snow sculptures located around the area as well.

The Sun Island Scenic Area:
