The Character Fu, a Chinese New Year Decoration, is an integral part of Chinese New Year's Festivities. The character Fu translates as good fortune in English. Known as Fu, this character can be found in almost every home and business during the Chinese New Year. Traditionally the character is painted on a square piece of red paper which is turned 45 degrees. The character is then hung upside down because the Chinese words for "upside down fu" sound the same as luck arriving. Traditionally people would paint them and give them to their friends. During China's dynastic periods even the Emperor would paint them and give them to selected officials. The Fu's can be hung on doors, windows, and throughout the house, or shop. Many times the Character fu is pasted on doors along with Couplets, or Door God woodblock prints. The origin of this tradition has been lost in the mists of time, but it still considered an essential part of China's New Year.
